USM08 will present an integrated conference program, ‘Mobile Publics’, in the BMW Edge Theatre and an outdoor multimedia program, ‘Connected Communities’, involving mobile projections, VJ sets, live streaming, video and animation programs, audiovisual performances and interactives, all utilizing Fed Square’s extensive screen infrastructure.

The Mobile Publics conference explores a range of new pressures and possibilities that are generated as city life is transformed by digital technology. Large screen precincts offer dynamic examples of emergent relations between media, architecture and urban space, between art and everyday life, between local and global cultures. The conference will promote new multi-disciplinary frameworks for understanding innovative public uses of technology, media and art in contemporary cities.

Guest speakers from Australia, Japan, Korea, Germany, Netherlands, Taiwan, UK, and USA will address the following key themes:

* the growing role of urban screens in shaping the ambiance of contemporary public space, and the new forms of agency created by media-dense environments
* future directions in mobile and screen media, and the potential of novel interfaces to support new modes of social interaction and community building
* the function of public art in positioning strategies for creative cities, and the capacity of large screen precincts to serve as focal points in urban regeneration projects
* the emergence of new forms of cross-cultural exchange and the construction of transnational public spheres.
