research from a number of disciplines - including art history, anthropology and
sociology - economics, in particular, has been the main contributor to this
literature. This paper argues for the need to counteract a dominant economic
tradition and proposes an analytical framework which re-works existing
approaches to the sociology of art and to the study of globalization in the
arts. Focusing on empirical research on the art market in <st1:country-region
w:st="on">Ireland</st1:country-region> and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region
w:st="on">Scotland</st1:country-region></st1:place>, it will argue for the
need to revise two key areas of sociological enquiry: the impact of
