Call it a mobile, cell phone, or keitai; when an incoming call is heard,<BR>
both power and place concerns arise. Mobile telephony adoption and usage<BR>
is about power and place. The power of the mobile is increasing as it<BR>
integrates with other everyday technologies, objects, and across media<BR>
platforms. Currently there is significant emerging work on mobiles in<BR>
various disciplines in Australia and New Zealand, as part of a vibrant<BR>
international reckoning of mobiles and online technologies.<BR>
<BR>
In this light, the aim of the Placing Mobile Communication stream, and<BR>
associated special issue of the Australian Journal of Communication, is<BR>
to bring together researchers undertaking work on mobiles, with the<BR>
particular aim of offering an opportunity to present and reflect upon<BR>
Australian and New Zealand work in progress. We also wish to encourage<BR>
discussion on where mobiles fit into media and communications<BR>
traditions, and also on how local work fits into, and reconfigures,<BR>
various contexts (regional, international, subcultural, national).<BR>
<BR>
Abstracts that examine the subject area from different theoretical and<BR>
methodological approaches are welcomed. Suggested topics include (but<BR>
are certainly not limited to):<BR>
<BR>
Gender politics and the mobile phone<BR>
Locating the local and the global with mobiles Theories of the digital<BR>
divide and the mobile phone Mobility and cultural geography The<BR>
integration of mobile phone use into professional and personal life<BR>
Mobile phone use from both mass and interpersonal communication<BR>
perspectives Mobiles as media The place of mobiles in media, new media,<BR>
and communications studies Reflections on the mobile, and mobile<BR>
research, in Australia and New Zealand Mobiles policy, regulation, and<BR>
political economy<BR>

Contributions under these topic areas are welcome, as are suggestions of<BR>
