ANNOUNCED</b></font><br>

<div><font color="#000000">The X111th Biennial Conference of the Film
& History Association of Australia and New Zealand (FHAANZ ) will
present for the first time a series of awards as part of the
Conference program.</font></div>
<div><font color="#000000"><br>
<b>Research and Writing Awards<br>
</b>The Film & History Association Research and Writing Awards
have been devised to honour excellence in film and television history
publishing and research. Three competitive research and writing awards
will be conferred by the Patrons of the Film & History Association
for best monograph, best essay and best unpublished work.<br>
<br>
<b>Achievement Awards<br>
</b>Two Achievement Awards will be bestowed by the Film and History
Conference organisers. These awards will recognise excellence of
achievement by Australian and New Zealand film and television
historians respectively.<br>
<br>
o<x-tab> </x-tab><b>The Joan Long
Award</b> commemorates the major contribution of the late producer,
director and screenwriter whose passion for the medium of film, its
future, its institutions, and the preservation of its history in
Australia, was both selfless and inspiring.<br>
o<x-tab> </x-tab><b>The Jonathon Dennis Award</b> is named after the
driving force behind, spokesperson for, and first director of the New
Zealand Film Archive who died from cancer, aged 48, in 2001.<br>

The Film and History Conference</b> is held every two years and is an
opportunity for international film scholars, archivists, and
filmmakers to present their thoughts on recent debates and events in
the fields of: film history, national and transnational cinemas, film
theory, film practice and the importance of cinema to specific
communities.</font><br>
<font color="#000000"></font></div>
<div><font color="#000000">This year's conference is titled<i> Telling
Stories: Cinema, History and Experience</i> and will be jointly
presented by the Department of Visual Culture, Monash University and
The School of Applied Communication, RMIT University. The Conference
will be staged at a number of central city venues, and run from 16 -
19 November.</font></div>
