<div>Abstract</div>
<div><br>
This timely interdisciplinary seminar will discuss disability in</div>
<div>Australia today, covering topics such as:</div>
<div>*what challenges face people with disabilities;</div>
<div>*how do we understand the contemporary social relations of</div>
<div>disability;</div>
<div>*what characterizes structures, discourses, and practices
of</div>
<div>power in the lives of people with disabilities;</div>
<div>*what are the narratives and images of disability;</div>
<div>*what is the role of the university and disability studies;</div>
<div>*what are the challenges for service providers, policy
makers,</div>
<div>and the disability movement;<br>
*what are the prospects and opportunities for transforming</div>
<div>Australian culture and society to ensure justice and fulfilment
for<br>
people with disabilities.</div>

The seminar will also introduce and discuss the challenge and promise
of<br>
critical disability studies, placing this dynamic and stimulating
new</div>
<div>field in an Australian and international context.</div>

Cocks, who will be introduced by Professor Graeme Turner,
Director,<br>
CCCS. Copies will be available for sale courtesy of the UQ
Bookshop<br>

The venue is wheelchair accessible. Hearing loops have been installed

the seminar room. The event will be interpreted in Australian Sign<br>

<div><b>SYDNEY DISABILITY IN AUSTRALIA SEMINAR DETAILS</b></div>

<div><font color="#000000">What is the situation of Australian with
disabilities today? What are the key trends, challenges,
opportunities, and frameworks? This seminar will provide an audit of
where we are in Australia, utilising activists and scholars in the
area of disability to explore disability today, and tomorrow.
Whether we call it oppression, apartheid, or any other name, this
seminar will provide an audit with regard to where Australians with
disabilities are now in Australian society. How is disability studies
responding? How should our policy, research and scholarship respond
into the future? Short presentations by the presenters will be
followed by an opportunity for participants to draw upon their life
experience. Whether you are a person with disability, academic,
policy maker, carer, parent or concerned citizen, this is a seminar
for you.</font></div>

collaborative and cross-disciplinary initiative of several
universities, disability peak bodies, industry groups and researchers.

participatory and inclusive society for people with disability. The
Institute actively promotes the participation of people with
disability in higher education, and as equal partners in disability
research. DSaRI's research focus encompasses theoretical and applied
research, and research programs that address accessibility and
participation issues across the spectrum of disability (social group)
