<b>NTU releases 2002 Statistics Report</b>
<p>The Northern Territory University released its 2002 Statistics Report
today with the institution experiencing positive growth overall.
<p>The report reveals results for both the Higher Education and TAFE
sectors of the University and includes everything from total enrolments
to course and faculty student numbers, gender, Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander student status, age and choice of study modes.
<p>Overall, the total number of students studying in the Higher Education
sector increased in 2002 by 477, with the female component of that figure
increasing by 298 on last year’s statistic and the male element up by 183
people.
<p>The TAFE sector, for the reporting period to 31 December, 2001, grew
by 586 students on the previous year, with 4225 females and 5154 males
enrolled.
<p>More females than males chose to study externally in the Higher Education
sector, with 998 females involved in external study compared to 268 males.
<p>Of the students enrolled in 2002 in Higher Education 22 per cent are
aged 20-24 years and eight per cent are 50 years plus. Just nine per cent
are under 20 years of age.

<br>The most popular level of course work within the Higher Education sector
is a Bachelor Degree – 3369 students, followed by Postgraduate Coursework
– 1000 students.
<p>78.9 per cent of all students listed the Northern Territory as their
permanent home location, with 16.2 per cent from other areas of Australia,
3.3 per cent from Asia/Middle East, and 1.5 percent from other overseas
countries, including Africa, America, Europe, Indian and Pacific Ocean
countries.
<p>There are 223 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled
in the NTU Higher Education sector, with the majority of those students
studying with the Law, Business and Arts, and the Science, Information
Technology and Education faculties.
<p>In the TAFE sector for 2001 part-time course enrolments jumped
935 from 9972 in the year 2000 to 10,907, while full-time course enrolments
remained steady in 2001 at 703.
<p>The report shows 1827 TAFE students are less than 19-years-old, 1413
are 20-24 years of age, and 1256 are 30-34, while 982 people enrolled are
aged 40-44, and there are 882 students 50-years-old or older.
<p>The majority of TAFE students are enrolled in the Faculty of Science,
Information Technology and Education, with the faculties of Law, Business
and Arts, and Technology and Industrial Education fielding most other TAFE
students.
